Got a newer model of the iPhone now? Thinking of getting rid of your old one for a few dollars on eBay?
Don’t forget to follow these tips to clear your iPhone’s data, before you hand it over to a new owner!
UNPAIR YOUR APPLE WATCH
If you also own an Apple Watch and you paired it with your iPhone, remember to unpair it again, before selling it on.
Keeping your watch nearby, go to the Apple Watch app on your phone.
Now open the My Watch tab and choose the watch you want to unpair.
Click on unpair Apple Watch. This may require your Apple ID to deactivate.
The phone will make a backup of the watch, which can be used to restore it, if you re-pair it with a new iPhone.
BACK THE IPHONE UP
You can backup your iPhone to keep the bits you want on your new phone.
For example, keep your photos by using the iCloud.
To do this, toggle on photos and then do the same on iCloud photo library.
Go to settings and then iCloud and into iCloud backup. Ensure iCloud backup is on. Choose back up now to save your photographs.
SWITCH OFF IMESSAGE
This is easily done by going into settings then selecting messages. Now go to iMessage and switch it off. Voila!
LOG OUT OF ICLOUD
To sign out of iCloud, go into settings and pick Apple ID. This is the one with your photo, at the top. Now select sign out.
If you are on an earlier version of iPhone (i.e. iOS 7 or older) you can do this by choosing delete account. Then sign out and scroll down and choose delete from My iPhone.
GO BACK TO FACTORY SETTINGS
To restore the phone to factory settings, open the settings app.
Now go to general and choose reset. Then pick erase all content and settings.
If in the past you have enabled the find my iPhone function, you will have to input your ID and password.
NOW SIGN OUT OF ITUNES
Make sure you remember to sign out of iTunes and the app store by going into settings and selecting iTunes.
Now pick Apple ID and then, finally sign out.
SWITCH OFF THE ACTIVATION LOCK
You can turn off the activation lock, by going into settings and choosing iCloud. Next, tap on find my iPhone. Now you can use the slider to deactivate the function.
REMOVE THE IPHONE FROM YOUR ACCOUNT
Don’t forget the final step of taking the iPhone off your carrier account!
Now you are ready to pack up and sell your old iPhone!
